foods for weight loss

Anyone who has dipped a toe into the weight loss waters (which is, face it, most of us) has learned the hard way that, no, your body will not ignore what you eat. No amount of taking the stairs will make up for eating poorly, and though much of it is calories in versus calories out, the quality of the calories matters, too. There are several foods you must avoid while dieting. Here’s a list of some of the worst offenders, which should be banished from your pantry immediately!

1) Fast food ice cream drinks.
You know what I’m talking about. These delicious blends of ice cream, milkshakes and baked goods or candy bars are one of the most decadent desserts in the instant satisfaction industry, but they can have twice the sugar, fat and calories of ice cream! If you absolutely must get a cold treat, stick with frozen yogurt or a small ice cream cone.

2) Potato chips.
The danger of potato chips is in their serving size– and our inability to stick to it. Potato chips are one of the most binge-prone foods, and with a handful of chips packing in ridiculous amounts of fat and calories, it’s better to avoid them altogether.

3) White bread and white pasta.
These are refined grains, and even though they’re delicious, they provide no vitamins, little protein, and hardly any fiber. That means they’re high in empty calories, and they won’t even keep you full for very long! When you go for carbs, stick with whole wheat varieties.

4) Soda.
Soda is the only food or beverage that has been identified as a cause of obesity. Your average eight-ounce can of soda contains around 100 calories of pure sugar, which will cause blood sugar spikes followed by crashes that will make you hungry. Drinking your calories is a bad idea in general, because beverages don’t provide fiber that keeps you full and regulates your blood sugar, so stick to water. If you want a caffeine fix, go for coffee or tea.

5) Fruit juice.
Though it’s often touted as a healthy soda alternative for parents to give their kids, fruit juice is a no-go if you want to lose weight. Even one hundred percent juice can be harmful to your waistline because of the low fiber and high sugar content. If you want sweet, eat a piece of fruit! The scale will thank you.

6) Processed meat.
Hot dogs, delicious deli meat, and other highly-processed meats are terrible for weight loss. These Frankenfoods have been so heavily processed that any of the health benefits they once had are pretty much gone, replaced by fat and preservatives. In addition to having a correlation with weight gain, processed meat increases your risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Cut it out!

7) Commercial coffee drinks.
Unless you’re getting something relatively simple, your Starbucks order may pack in enough calories to serve as a meal on its own, with the fat and sugar to boot! Instead of getting coffee drinks (which should really be called caffeine milkshakes) on your way to work, brew your own cup of coffee. Even if you add a little creamer and sugar, you’ll be better off than you would be if you’d hit the drive-thru.
